SALEM, Mass. – The Husson University women's basketball team started off its two-game, two-day road trip in Massachusetts with a 78-66 victory over Salem State University on Saturday evening at Salem State's Twohig Gymnasium in non-conference play.
Husson (6-9) rode the back of freshman Saige Evans in the opening quarter, as it jumped out to a 24-18 lead after 10 minutes of action behind eight from Evans on 3-3 shooting.
The lead changed hands four times and the score was tied twice early on before senior Lauren Cook broke a 9-9 tie with a three-pointer to give the Eagles the lead with 5:26 to play in the first quarter.
Three players did all of the scoring for Husson in the second quarter, as senior Hannah Richards posted seven, while graduate student Trinity Montigny added six and Evans contributed four, as the Eagles took a 41-30 lead into the halftime break.
Following five-consecutive points from Richards to open the second half for Husson, freshman Lilly Roy exploded for 11-straight points of her own, including three three-pointers, as the Eagles led 57-40 following Roy's outburst. Husson kept its momentum alive and took a 66-51 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles opened the quarter on an 8-2 run to pick up their biggest lead of the game and cruised to their third-consecutive win.
Richards paced Husson with 18 points for the game, in addition to five rebounds and five assists and 7-7 shooting from the foul line.
Evans and Roy each posted career-highs of 16, while Evans also grabbed nine rebounds, including five offensive boards.
Husson will look to make it four-consecutive wins tomorrow when it heads to Lesley University for a 1 p.m. North Atlantic Conference game.
