HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Husson University women's soccer team fell in its opening game of the 20th annual Engineering Cup, hosted by the Stevens Institute of Technology, 6-1 to No. 10 New York University on Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
NYU struck fast in Saturday's contest, as Riley Mullady put the Violets (1-0-2) ahead 1-0 just over three minutes into the game on a free-kick goal.
The Violets added two goals to their lead in the span of less than two minutes, as Rena Kalargiros put one into the back of the net off of a shot that hit the post from Jessica Tonthat, in addition to Yukino Wakatsuki putting home a goal off a corner kick from Mullady to give NYU a 3-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the game.
After taking their 3-0 lead into the halftime break, the Violets would double their lead in the second half, as a goal from Hope Neale in the 47th minute, in addition to tallies from Wakatsuki and Alexa Buxbaum in the 64th and 70th minutes gave NYU a decisive edge.
Husson (0-3) would avoid the shutout thanks to a goal from junior Addi Laslie in the 82nd minute that hit off the crossbar and found its way over the goal line.
The Violets peppered the Husson goal relentlessly with shots, as they outshot the Eagles 28-5 for the game, including 20-5 in shots on goal.
Senior Hannah Kenney was in goal for Husson and saved 14 of the 20 shots that came her way.
The Eagles will conclude their participation in the Engineering Cup on Sunday when they battle SUNY Potsdam at 10 a.m.
