BANGOR, Maine — After trailing 2-0 in Husson University volleyball teams home opener on Friday, the Eagles battled back forcing a fourth set before falling 3-1 to New England College in non-conference action.
NEC (1-4) benefited early on Friday from several Husson (1-4) miscues to claim the opening set as both the Eagles and Pilgrims finished with double digit kills and attach percentages over .210.
Despite 11 attach errors in the second set, Husson battle NEC pulling with 15-15 before the Pilgrims rolled off three-straight points to open up an 18-15 edge. Husson tied the match again at 21-21, but NEC sealed the second set with four-straight points to come away with the 25-21 decision.
In the third set, Husson came out on fire as freshman
Kimberly Daniels took over on the attacking end en route to a career-high 11 kills for the match. The Eagles finished the third set hitting .323 as a team with 14 kills and only four errors to win the set 25-17 for force a fourth set.
Friday's fourth set came down to the wire despite NEC jumping out to a 10-3 edge to begin the set. The Pilgrims led 13-5 before Husson went on an 8-2 run to pull within 15-13.
Both the Eagles and Pilgrims would trade points with NEC leading 22-19 before fourth-straight kills from Husson — three from freshman
Mikayla Gray and one from sophomore
Alana Peruti gave the Eagles a 23-22 advantage.
However, NEC ended the night on a 3-0 run to come away with the 25-23 set-four win and the 3-1 decision.
Both Gray and Daniels finished with career highs for the match, Gray tallied 10 kills, while Daniels finished with 11.
Peruti posted six kills, while sophomore
Janna Preskorn tallied eight. Senior
Alyvia McIntyre finished with a game-high 39 assists and fellow senior
Beatrice Tursi scooped up a team-high 14 digs.
Additionally, freshmen
Amanda Mei Morse and
Jonna Travis each recorded a career-high 10 digs.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday when they host Curry College at 2 p.m.
