Women’s soccer falls in road action against Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – The Husson University women's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest to Bates College on Tuesday evening by a score of 4-1 at Garcelon Field in Lewiston.

Bates (1-0) jumped on Husson (0-2) early, as the Bobcats posted two goals inside the first 10 minutes of action, with the first goal coming courtesy of Gwyn Jamison, who received a pass from Mollie Franklin off of a corner kick and put the ball out of the reach of junior goalkeeper Madison Weigler for a 1-0 Bates lead.

The second goal of the contest for Bates came less than four minutes later, as the Bobcats took advantage of an Eagles giveaway in the attacking third, which led to a strike from Elanor Martin which beat the outstretched hands of Weigler to double the Bates advantage.

The Bobcats tacked on a third goal in the opening 45 minutes after a ball was sent back to the middle of the field by the Husson defense, which allowed Isabelle Bernal to get into the scoring column and make it 3-0 Bates.

The Eagles looked to stay within reach to end the first half as a nifty forward pass from senior Natalie Aviolla put fellow senior Kate Harriman into prime scoring position and the Glenburn native didn't waste the opportunity, bringing Husson to within 3-1 at halftime.

Husson was unable to keep the late first-half momentum going into the second half of play, as the Bobcats tacked on a late goal, with Bernal picking up her second of the game, concluding a 4-1 win for Bates.

Weigler stood between the posts for the full 90 minutes of action, making five saves on the nine shots she faced.

The Eagles outshot the Bobcats 19-14, but had less opportunities on target, as Bates held a 9-8 edge in shots on goal.

Husson is back in action on Saturday when it heads to New Jersey for the Engineering Cup at Stevens Institute of Technology, as the Eagles will battle No. 10 New York University at 2 p.m. to kick off their tournament schedule.
