BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest to UMass Boston on Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field by the final score of 2-1.
After an evenly-matched opening 20 minutes that saw neither team able to break the scoreless-deadlock, UMass Boston (6-1-3) posted back-to-back goals within a three-minute span to open up a 2-0 lead over Husson (3-5).
Sofia Schallmo tallied both goals for the Beacons, with the first one coming from outside the 18-yard box, as Schallmo received a pass from Daniella Celotto and was able to square herself up enough to blast the ball past junior goalie Madison Weigler and into the bottom left corner.
Schallmo and UMass Boston capitalized on a turnover from the Eagles in their defending-third of the field and Schallmo rewarded Celotto with her second assist of the game, as she blasted the ball into the back of the net.
Husson struck in the 29th minute of play, as junior Kendra Donahue sent a ball back into the 18-yard box after it was cleared out by the Beacons and senior Natalie Aviolla was able to touch the ball past the UMass Boston goalkeeper and send the ball over the goal line to bring the Eagles to within a goal.
The Beacons were able to carry their lead into the halftime break and managed to keep Husson off of the scoreboard in the second half, despite multiple chances for the Eagles, to come away with the road win.
Husson outshot UMass Boston 11-10 for the game, while both teams fired four shots on goal and took five corner kicks.
Weigler managed to make two saves in her 90 minutes between the posts on the four shots that the Beacons sent her way.
The Eagles are back to North Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday when they host the University of Maine-Presque Isle at 7:30 p.m.
