BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University field hockey team returned to the win-column on Saturday afternoon as it defeated the University of Southern Maine in overtime by a score of 3-2 at the John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
Husson (4-3) found the scoreboard first in Saturday's contest thanks to junior Maddie Arsenault, who fired a backhanded-shot past the Southern Maine (3-5) goalkeeper and into the back of the cage at the 9:50 mark to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
While the Huskies had limited offensive chances in the first half of play, they managed to knot the game up at one with less than a minute left in the first half, as Norie Tibbetts deflected a shot from Abigail Chartier past sophomore Maria Levesque and over the goal line to open the scoring for Southern Maine.
Husson regained its lead just over three minutes into the second half courtesy of senior Karlie Ramsdell, who put home her first goal of the year on a scramble inside the shooting arc, giving the Eagles a 2-1 edge at the 33:59 mark.
The Huskies once again responded, despite the Eagles dominating possession of the ball, as Tibbetts posted her second goal of the contest at the 38:47 mark to even the game up at two.
Husson had multiple chances during the remainder of regulation, but Southern Maine managed to hang on and force overtime for a second-consecutive year between the two teams.
In a reversal of last year's matchup, the Eagles came away with the victory this time, as Arsenault camped out in front of the cage and put home her second goal of the contest and seventh of the season on a pass from sophomore Faith Tillotson just over four minutes into overtime.
Husson outshot Southern Maine 25-5 for the game, including 14-3 in shots on goal, in addition to a 22-3 edge in penalty corners.
Levesque made one stop on the three shots she faced from the Huskies in the game.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday when they head to Waterville to battle Colby College at 12 p.m.
