PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Following an opening 45 minutes of scoreless play, the Husson University women's soccer team posted four goals in the second half to defeat the University of Maine-Presque Isle, 4-0, in its North Atlantic Conference opener at Park Family Field in Presque Isle on Tuesday.
Despite 11 shots on target from Husson (2-4, 1-0 NAC) in the first half of Tuesday afternoon's contest, UMPI (3-1, 0-1 NAC) goalkeeper Mia Voisine would keep the Eagles off of the scoreboard through 45 minutes.
Husson didn't take long to change the narrative in the second half, as junior Devon St. Louis pounced on a loose ball inside of the penalty area and blasted it into the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead with less than a minute gone in the second half.
Senior Kate Harriman recorded her fifth goal of the year at the 49-minute mark off of a corner kick from Husson, which was deflected by an Owls defender and fell right to the foot of Harriman.
Turmoil in the penalty area also resulted in the third goal of the game for the Eagles, as graduate student Lindsey Russell found the scoring column for the first time this year as she capitalized on another loose ball inside the 18-yard box and fired it past multiple players in front of the goal, giving Husson a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Rylee Speed added on a fourth and final goal for the Eagles in the 77th minute, as she took advantage of a perfectly placed pass from senior Caitlin Haley and put the ball just past the outstretched hand of Voisine and across the goal line to cap off the scoring in the game.
Husson outshot UMPI 30-3 for the game, including 19-2 in shots on goal, as well as a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Madison Weigler earned the shutout for the Eagles, as she stopped all three shots she faced in her 90 minutes in net.
The Eagles are back in action next Wednesday when they host Thomas College in the North Atlantic Conference home-opener at 7:30 p.m.
