PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team rolled to a 5-1 win in its North Atlantic Conference opener over the University of Maine-Presque Isle at Park Family Field in Presque Isle.
Husson (4-1-1, 1-0 NAC) controlled much of the possession throughout the opening 10-plus minutes and was rewarded with a goal from sophomore Daniel Noguera, who one-timed a shot off of a great pass from junior Carlos Etchevers from just outside the right edge of the 18-yard box to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Graduate student Josh Nadeau doubled the lead for Husson in the 22nd minute of action as he took advantage of a misplay by the UMPI (1-3, 0-2 NAC) goalkeeper and placed a low shot into the back of the open net to make it 2-0.
The Eagles wouldn't have to wait long for their third goal of the match, as a failed clearance from the Owls found the foot of Noguera, who had his cross deflected by an UMPI defender at about the six-yard box, but luckily for Husson it found a wide-open senior Florian Gasser and the Switzerland native found paydirt with a left-footed strike less than a minute after Nadeau to put the Eagles up 3-0.
After a goal from UMPI in the 26th minute, Husson extended its lead back to three goals in the 57th minute of play as senior Pedro Molina capitalized on a give-and-go with Noguera and put home his first goal of the year.
Senior Alejandro Mora concluded the scoring for the Eagles as he rewarded Etchevers with his second assist of the game on a quality through-ball, which Mora one-timed past the UMPI goalkeeper in the 90th minute of play to bring the game to its final of 5-1.
Husson outshot the Owls 14-5 for the game, including 8-2 in shots on goal, in addition to an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Wessel De Wit started the contest in net for the Eagles and didn't make any saves in his 63-plus minutes, while classmate Garret Jordan made one save on the lone shot on net he faced after taking over for De Wit.
Husson opens up the home portion of its NAC schedule next Wednesday when it hosts Thomas College at 5 p.m.
