BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team opened its 2024 season and its first year under head coach Carlos Bermudez on Friday evening with a 1-1 draw against the University of Southern Maine at Boucher Field.
Husson (0-0-1) opened the scoring nearly 18 minutes into the opening half, as graduate student Mosi Masimango took advantage of a misplay from the Southern Maine (0-0-1) goalie on a free kick from senior Mario Alvarez and placed a shot into the bottom left corner to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Samuel Bermudez was able to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard in the opening frame, as he saved a low attempt from Jack Brady, keeping the score in favor of Husson headed into the halftime break.
Southern Maine evened the score back up in the second half, as Brady was able to capitalize on his shot this time, placing a header into the bottom right corner off of a free kick from Vincent Anderson with less than 35 minutes remaining.
Both teams had quality chances in the final 30-plus minutes of play, including a shot from sophomore Beckett Parkin which was saved off of the goaline by a Huskies' defender, but neither team could find the game-winning goal, sending both teams to a 0-0-1 record.
Bermudez manned the net for the entire 90 minutes for Husson, making four saves on five shots faced.
Husson outshot Southern Maine 13-9 and managed to force six corner kicks during the game, compared to just three for the Huskies.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday when they travel to the Wentworth Institute of Technology for a 12 p.m. kick-off.
