BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Husson University softball team made history on Thursday evening, as the team set a new program record for consecutive-wins during its doubleheader sweep of Bates College, taking game one 9-5 and capping off the evening with a 3-0 win in game two. With Husson's win in game one, the team recorded its 22nd-consecutive win, setting a new record for the program.
GAME 1:
Husson (28-4) struck first at Pickard Diamond, the home of the Bowdoin Polar Bears, in the form of an RBI-triple from junior Bulla McCabe that scored sophomore Lydia Rice, in addition to McCabe scoring on a throwing-error from the Bates' (8-21) right fielder to make it 2-0 Eagles after one inning.
The Eagles padded their lead in the visitor-half of the third, as two-RBI doubles from senior Kenzie Dore and freshman Josie Cornell extended the Husson lead to 6-0. Dore's two-base hit scored McCabe and Rice, while Cornell's two-bagger to right-center field plated sophomore Payson Kaler and Dore.
Another run came the way of the Eagles the following inning after a three-run home-half of the third inning from Bates, as junior Tori Exel reached base due to an error from the Bobcats and allowed Rice to score her second run of the contest.
A two-run home run from Dore later on in the inning that just made it over the center field fence capped off the Husson scoring, as Exel also crossed home-plate on the play and made it 9-3 Eagles.
Bates managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't muster enough offense to complete the comeback.
Sophomore Danielle Masterson earned her ninth win of the season in the circle, pitching seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks, in addition to posting 10 strikeouts.
Dore led the way at the plate, posting three hits and four RBIs, while Cornell added two hits and two RBIs and McCabe contributed two hits and one RBI.
GAME 2:
The Eagles used a complete-game shutout from freshman Ana Lang in the finale of Thursday's double-dip to come away with a 3-0 victory and clinch the first season sweep of the Maine-based New England Small College Athletic Conference schools in program history.
Sophomore Emily Dunbar put an end to five scoreless innings to begin game two, as she doubled to center field and scored Cornell, in addition to junior Kiara McLeod crossing home on the play due to an error.
Graduate student Katie Raymond provided Husson with an insurance run in the top-half of the seventh, as she scored on a passed ball and brought the game to its final score of 3-0.
Lang allowed some traffic on the base path, surrendering eight hits, but allowed no runs to cross home-plate in her seven innings of work, in addition to punching-out 12 Bobcat hitters on the evening.
Raymond's two hits led the Husson offense at the dish, while Dore, Cornell and Dunbar contributed one hit each.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday when they host the University of New England for a non-conference doubleheader with game one set to get underway at 3 p.m.
