WATERVILLE, Maine — After nearly a month away from the field the Husson University softball team returned to action on Tuesday sweeping Colby College 8-6 in nine innings and 5-4 to win its seventh-straight game of the year.
In the opening game of Tuesday's in-state doubleheader showdown Colby (9-9) capitalized on two runs in the four and three in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead and looked to be in the driver's seat.
However, Husson (12-4) chipped into the Mules lead with two runs in the fifth, scoring its first run on an RBI single by junior
Tori Exel and the second on a Colby miscue to pull within 5-2.
The Eagles held the Mules in check in the fifth and sixth inning, allowing the offense to tie the game in the top of the seventh with three runs and force extra innings.
Senior
Julia Gregoire single to center scoring two runs and freshman
Josie Cornell connected on an RBI single to tie the game 5-5.
Husson would hold the Mules in check in the seventh and eighth innings and benefited from another three-run inning in the top of the ninth to take an 8-6 edge.
Sophomore
Jordan Lambert tallied an infield single to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead, while junior
Kiara McLeod doubled in a run and sophomore
Lydia Rice singled to center, plating the Eagles eighth run of the game.
Colby rallied in the bottom half of the inning, scoring an unearned run, but Husson's three-run ninth inning proved to be the difference.
Senior
Jess Pomerleau, Exel, senior
Kenzie Dore, McLeod and Rice all tallied two hits each in the win as Husson finished the opening game with 14 hits.
Freshman
Ana Lang got the win in the circle, entering in the seventh inning and striking out three. Fellow freshman
Sierra Yates came in for starting sophomore
Danielle Masterson who pitched the first five innings, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs. Yates also threw well, not allowing a hit over 1.2 innings and recording two strikeouts.
In the finale, Lang got the start of the Eagles throwing seven innings, picking up her second win of the day, while allowing nine hits, four runs and striking out five.
As they did in Tuesday's opener, Colby struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning before Husson got on the board with a run in the second.
Gregoire tied the game with an RBI double in the third and Cornell gave Husson a 4-2 edge with a two-RBI single.
Colby would homer in the bottom of the third to pull within 4-3 and tied the game 4-4 later in the frame, but Husson took advantage on another Mules miscue in the fourth inning to score the winning run.
Following the winning run in the fourth, Lang dazzled over the final four frames allowing just two base runners to reach base, while recording two strikeouts.
Gregoire continued her impressive afternoon at the plate in the final going 3-4, including another double.
Husson will now battle the University of Southern Maine on the road Thursday with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
