BANGOR, Maine -- The Husson University softball team came out on top in its doubleheader over Vermont State University Lyndon, with a sweep in its home and conference openers on the season.
GAME 1:
After a scoreless first inning from both squads, the Husson (14-4, 2-0) bats exploded in the bottom of the second, scoring a barrage of 17 runs.
Senior
Julia Gregoire ignited the run with a single to center field, in a inning that saw eight different Eagles recording at least one RBI. Junior
Tori Exel contributed with three RBI's on a single and double, while senior
Kenzie Dore added four RBI's of her own, with a single and a home run over the right-center wall. Dore finished the inning with a total of three hits, tying the NCAA Divison III record for most hits in a single inning.
The Eagles were led by a well-rounded effort in the circle, with sophomore
Danielle Masterson getting the starting nod. Freshman
Jazmin Johnson came into relief, earning the win for Husson, with sophomore
Emily Rerick finishing the game after an inning of work and two strikeouts.
Additionally for Husson, junior
Bulla McCabe tallied two hits and two RBI's, with sophomore
Lydia Rice and freshman
Lyndsee Reed adding three hits of their own and three combined RBI's, giving the Eagles the 22-0 win in five innings.
GAME 2:
Much like the first game, Husson was able to take its early lead over Lyndon (5-12, 1-3) in the second inning. This time freshman
Camryn King started the action by knocking in two runs off a double to center field. Fellow freshman
Josie Cornell followed suit with a single up the middle, bringing King home, to make it a 3-0 lead for the Eagles.
King continued at the plate in the third inning with a single, before advancing to third on an error that scored three runs for Husson.
Freshman pitcher
Ana Lang started for the Eagles, putting in three innings of work with four strikeouts and one hit allowed. Freshman
Sierra Yates and Rerick came into relief for Husson, combining for three strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Gregiore ended the game after six innings with a home run to left field, giving Husson the 8-0 win and conference-action sweep over the Hornets.
