BANGOR, Maine - Husson University defeated Maine Maritime Academy, 15-12, in North Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action at the John P. Boucher Field on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the start of the contest the Husson (7-7, 6-1 NAC) women's lacrosse team held a brief ceremony to honor the program's two seniors:
Abigail Booth and
Montanna Carrier.
The Eagles opened the game with goals from junior
Maddy Benoit and sophomore
Averi Baker in the first five minutes and held a 5-3 advantage after the opening frame. The teams swapped scores in the second quarter as the Eagles led 8-5 at intermission after Baker netted her fourth goal of the first half with 2:43 before the break.
Maine Maritime Academy (8-7, 3-4 NAC) tallied four of the seven goals scored during the third period and the first two in the fourth frame to tie the game at 11-11 with 12:52 left to play. The Eagles responded quickly in a matter of 25 seconds later to retake the lead when freshman
Azabell Assaf hit pay dirt for the second time of the game before Baker gave the host a two-goal cushion with 10:10 left in the fourth frame.
MMA's Hazel Stoddard answered right way by winning the ensuing draw and took the ball right to the Eagle net for her fifth of the contest to cut their deficit to 12-11 with 10:01 remaining in the game, but Husson received goals from sophomore
Laela Martinez and senior
Sophia Gomez at the 5:51 and 4:26 marks, respectively, and used stingy defense play in the closing minutes to earn the program's third unblemished mark at home and the first since the 2021 season.
Husson held the lead in shots (38-25), shots on goal (24-21), ground balls (33-27) and caused turnovers (18-13) while Maine Maritime held the advantage in draw controls (17-14) on the afternoon.
Junior
Emma Begin made nine saves in the net for the Eagles to earn her sixth victory of the season, including her 200th career save when she stop a Stoddard shot at the 4:23 mark of the second stanza to become the fourth goal keeper in program history to earn this milestone. Begin also scooped up a team-high five ground balls.
Maine Maritime netminder sophomore Ella Bowes turned away nine shots with a ground ball in the setback.
Baker tallied six goals with three assists for nine total points, becoming the third Eagle in program history to record back-to-back 50 point seasons and the first in over 13 years. She also tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover in the victory. Benoit added three goals, two assists, three ground balls, three caused turnovers and a draw control. Assaf scored three goals with an assist, a ground ball and a caused turnover. Gomez tallied two goals, two assists, a ground ball and a caused turnover. Devyn Veits picked up seven controls with five ground balls.
Stoddard scored five goals with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and a game-high 12 draw controls. Lillian Diversi added four goals and Aubrey Mitchell registered three goals, two assists, six ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls to lead the Mariners on the afternoon.
The concludes the 2024 regular season for the Eagles.
