CANTON, N.Y. - Alana McDonald scored with 1:35 remaining in the first overtime period to lift third seed State University of New York at Morrisville past second seed Husson University, 13-12, in a North Atlantic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship semifinal contest at the State University New York at Canton Turf Field on Saturday evening.
SUNY Morrisville (8-8) maintained the lead for most of the contest, but Husson (7-8) tied the game with 20.3 seconds left in regulation on the heels of a 4-0 run that began at the 5:20 mark of the third frame before the Mustangs punched home the winner in overtime.
Anyssia Ingersoll tailed her fourth of the game after taking a nice pass from Jazlyn Leet to lift the Mustangs to a 12-8 cushion with 6:06 left in the third, but sophomore
Laela Martinez struck with an assisted goal of her own 46 seconds later to jumpstart the Eagles' comeback scoring surge.
Martinez kicked off the fourth frame with her second goal of the game 35 seconds into the quarter before sophomore
Gracie Gardner cut their deficit to 12-11 23 seconds later. The game remained a one goal difference until the 20.3 second mark of the fourth stanza when junior
Natalie Whitten scored the tying goal to force the extra play.
Jaele Naab received a free position shot opportunity that was turned away by junior
Emma Begin at the 2:13 mark of the overtime period, but the Mustangs regained possession after the Eagles turned the ball over and McDonald registered the game-winner with a breakaway goal 38 seconds later to send SUNY Morrisville into the NAC championship game against top seed SUNY Canton, who defeated State University of New York Polytechnic Institute earlier in the day by a score of 16-3.
Husson held the lead in draw controls (18-11) and the Mustangs had the advantage in caused turnovers (19-8) and shots on goal (22-20) while the teams tied in shots (28-28) and ground balls (26-26).
Begin made nine saves, including turning away six free-position shots with a ground ball in the setback while Rebecca Thomas stop eight shots with four ground balls for SUNY Morrisville.
Benoit scored three goals with an assist, and a pair of grounds balls, caused turnovers and draw controls. Sophomore
Averi Baker added three goals and three draw controls. Martinez scored twice with three assists, three ground balls and four draw controls. Senior
Sophia Gomez chipped in with two goals, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Whitten finished the game with a goal, two assists and three ground balls. Gardner netted a goal for the Eagles in the setback.
Ingersoll tallied four goals and an assist with seven ground balls, five caused turnovers and eight draw controls. McDonald netted four goals with a ground ball, a caused turnover and two draw control. Leet contributed two goals, an assist, six ground balls, seven caused turnovers and a draw control. Maddie Bum had a goal with three assists, four ground balls and a caused turnover. Jillian Dodge and Alexa Ringgold added a goal for the Mustangs in the victory.
This concludes the 2024 season for the Husson University women's lacrosse team.
