WATERVILLE, Maine – Sophomore
Averi Baker scored five goals to help propel Husson University past Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action at Smith Field on Wednesday evening.
Senior
Devyn Veits opened the scoring just 28 seconds into play and freshman
Azabell Assaf capped the first quarter ledger with an unassisted tally and Husson (6-7, 5-1 NAC) held an 8-0 lead going into the second stanza.
The Eagles obtained a 10-1 cushion when junior
Natalie Whitten netted her lone goal of the game off a draw control win by Veits with 11:56 before the break. Baker scored back-to-back goals at the 8:04 and 4:05 marks of the second quarter and sophomore
Laela Martinez capped the first half scoring to make it a 13-1 game with 2:39 left in the half.
Three different Husson players hit pay dirt in the second half before Thomas College (2-11, 1-5 NAC) completed the game scoring with a goal from Mara Gentry in the closing minutes of the game.
Husson held the lead in shots (36-8), shots on goal (24-6), ground balls (20-16), draw controls (17-8) and caused turnovers (15-7) in the victory.
The Eagles deployed both goalies in the victory, as juniors
Emma Begin and
Lacey Scanlon combined to make one save while Gewendolyn Schillie and Bristol Sine made eight stops for the Terriers.
In today's victory, Gomez notched her 100th career point with a goal at the 8:23 mark of the first quarter to become the ninth Eagle in program history to reach this milestone. She finished the game with two goals, an assist, a ground ball and a caused turnover.
Baker added an assist to go along with her five goals. Martinez added two goals, an assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Assaf scored two goals with a draw control. Veits netted a goal on three shots with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and 11 draw controls. Whitten contributed a goal, a assist and a ground ball. Junior
Jordyn Lengle scored a goal with eight ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Juniors
Maddy Benoit and
Emma Romatzick each scored a goal while sophomore
Gracie Gardner was credited with an assist.
Mary LaRochelle netted two goals with a ground ball and four draw controls to lead the Terriers in the setback. Gentry, Emily Wallingford and Samantha Snow each added a goal while Sage Brown had two assists.
The Eagles closes out the regular season with a NAC contest on Saturday when they host Maine Maritime Academy at 3:30 p.m.
