FARMINGTON, Maine – The Husson University softball team extended its winning streak to 17 games on Tuesday evening following a North Atlantic Conference, doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine at Farmington, taking game one 11-0 in five innings, before capturing a win in game two by a score of 6-3.
GAME 1:
Sophomore Danielle Masterson tallied her first-career no-hitter, allowing just one walk and one additional base runner during her five innings of work, while striking out seven batters in Husson's (22-4, 8-0 NAC) 11-0 game one victory.
A one-out double from senior Jess Pomerleau got the traffic on the bases started for the Eagles in the top-half of the first and Pomerleau posted the first run on the scoreboard two batters later, as an error from Farmington (11-9, 4-2 NAC) extended the inning on a ball in play from junior Tori Exel and plated Pomerleau.
Graduate student Katie Raymond knocked in two more runs for Husson the following inning, as with runners on second and third, Raymond drove a triple into center field and scored junior Kiara McLeod and sophomore Lydia Rice to bring the score to 3-0 Eagles after two innings.
Husson blew the game open in the visitor-half of the fourth inning, as eight runs on four hits came the way of the Eagles and allowed them to extend their lead to 11-0. The big inning saw RBI-base hits from McLeod, junior Bulla McCabe, senior Kenzie Dore and McLeod again, as 12 Husson batters came to the plate in the frame.
McLeod posted two of the seven Eagle hits in the contest to lead all Husson batters, while Raymond, Pomerleau, McCabe, Dore and senior Julia Gregoire each tallied a base hit. Raymond and McCabe combined to drive in five RBIs, in addition to Rice scoring three runs in the game.
GAME 2:
A five-run fifth inning from the Eagles proved to be the difference in Tuesday's finale, as two hits from Gregoire and seven strong innings from freshman Ana Lang willed Husson to a 6-3 win in game two.
Dore got the scoring underway for the Eagles in their first at-bat, as the senior pushed an RBI-single through the right side to score freshman Camryn King from second base, after the Corinna, Maine native walked and stole second base to get into scoring position.
The Beavers managed to keep the Husson offense off the scoreboard until the fifth inning, as a costly error from Farmington kept the inning alive for the Eagles. Dore reached base on an error from the Farmington infield which allowed junior Tatyanna Biamby and Pomerleau to score and make it a 3-0 edge for Husson.
Exel capitalized on the miscue from the Beavers, as she ripped a single to right field with runners on second and third and added two more runs to the Husson lead. Gregoire posted the final run of the game for the Eagles after she doubled home Exel.
Farmington got three runs off of Lang in the home-half of the fifth, but it wasn't enough, as Husson remained unblemished in NAC play.
Dore and Exel posted the other two base hits for the Eagles, in addition to Gregoire's two hits, while Exel added two RBIs to her statline.
Lang struck out 12 batters over her seven innings of work, allowing no earned runs and just one walk and three hits, while finishing off her 11th win of the year.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Waterville to take on Thomas College in another NAC doubleheader. First-pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
