Holmes’ walk-off hit-by-pitch caps off rally for baseball against Bates

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team erased a two-run deficit over the final two innings and secured a 4-3 non-conference win over Bates College on Tuesday evening at the Winkin Complex thanks to a walk-off hit-by-pitch from freshman Matt Holmes.

Sophomore Keegan Cyr provided Husson (12-9) with a lead-off base runner in the home-half of the first inning following a single up the middle. Cyr would advance to third on a failed pickoff attempt from the Bates (11-13) pitcher and would post the first run of the game for the Eagles on an RBI-single from senior Jackson Curtis.

A three-run top of the third from the Bobcats gave them a 3-1 edge off of three hits in the inning. Husson put a base runner on in four of the next five innings, but was unable to come up with any more runs on the scoreboard.

The luck changed for the Eagles in the bottom of the eighth, following back-to-back walks from Cyr and senior Akira Warren to get the inning going. Curtis recorded his second RBI of the day the next at-bat, after the Ellsworth High School graduate plated Cyr again on a single to right field. Holmes brought the tying run in to score one batter later, as he grounded into a fielder's choice to first base which allowed Warren to come in and score from third.

After a scoreless top-half of the ninth inning from Bates, freshman Kevin Connolly gave Husson a lead-off base runner in the inning with a single. Following a ground out from sophomore Colin Marshall to move senior Austin Snow, who pinch ran for Connolly, to second base, Cyr was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second for the Eagles.

Warren was unintentionally awarded a free pass to give Husson a bases loaded opportunity with just one out in the inning. Curtis couldn't drive in the winning run, as a fielder's choice to the shortstop allowed the Bobcats to get a force-out at home and prolong the inning. Holmes brought in the winning run to score the following at-bat after he was struck by a pitch on a 2-2 count, bringing in Cyr from third base.

Cyr and Curtis both posted two-hit games to lead the Husson offense, while Curtis and Holmes combined to drive in the four Eagle runs. Cyr and Warren drew four of the six Husson walks, in addition to Cyr scoring three of the four runs for the Eagles.

Eight Husson pitchers each saw time on the mound in the victory, as freshman Wyatt Stevens, senior Zain Fitzsimmons, sophomore Allen Wheaton, sophomore Ben Phillips, senior Ben Taneman, senior Ryan Penney, junior Tyler Michaud and Holmes combined to allow just three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out 10 batters. Holmes picked up the win after pitching in just his second game as an Eagle, as the freshman hurled a scoreless ninth inning.

Husson is back in action at the Winkin Complex on Saturday and Sunday, as the Eagles welcome the University of Maine at Farmington to the Harold Alfond Diamond for a four-game North Atlantic Conference series. The series will begin on Saturday with a doubleheader, as first-pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
