BREVARD, North Carolina – The Husson University men's lacrosse team prevailed against Brevard College on Friday evening, winning 11-7.
In a tightly-contested game, Husson (2-3) used a four-goal fourth quarter to pull away from Brevard (0-5), gaining its second win of the young season.
Junior Nathan Vibber struck first with a goal that saw 5:27 left in the opening quarter, which was followed by a Brevard counter-goal, just two minutes later. Then with just 40 seconds left on the period clock, sophomore Kolton Gillilan scored his first of four goals on the day, capturing the lead back to the Eagles.
The second quarter was a period of unanswered runs for each of the teams, that started with Brevard scoring twice in the matter of four minutes, before sophomore Jacob Sargent started a three goal run for Husson. Freshman Drew Clinch joined in with a score, on an assist from sophomore Alex Walsh, who then scored one of his own with 6:05 remaining in the first half. The Tornados closed the half with another goal, leaving the Eagles in possession of a 5-4 lead with 30 minutes of gametime left.
Much like the first quarter, Husson scored first in the new half, on Gillilan's second of the day, before Brevard answered back with one of their own. 46 seconds later, however, Vibber responded for the Eagles, extending the lead to 7-5, heading into the final period of play.
The Eagles blew the doors open in the fourth quarter, reining-in a bombardment of four goals to seal the victory. Walsh and Gillilan led the charge again, either scoring or assisting on every Husson goal in the quarter, with freshman Owen Giorgio also contributing the first goal of his collegiate career.
Gillilan finished with four scores and one assist, followed by Vibber and Walsh at two goals-apiece, and sophomore Cohen Trnka bringing in 11 saves while in net for the Eagles.
Husson plays Keystone College next in La Plume, Pennsylvania, on Sunday morning, for the team's final game of the spring trip.
