DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Husson University baseball team dropped its final game of the 2024 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Friday evening to the University of Mount Union, by a score of 10-0.
Husson (2-4) struggled at the plate during Friday's contest, as it tallied just two base hits for the game, while Mount Union (8-3) capitalized on a nine-run third inning to put a strangle-hold on its lead.
The Purple Raiders struck for a solo run in the bottom of the second inning, as they took advantage of runners on the corners and plated one run on an RBI-single to center field.
Mount Union exploded for nine runs in its next turn at-bat, tallying just two hits in the inning, but it showcased some good plate-discipline, as the Eagles walked five batters and hit two Purple Raiders in the inning. The big blow from Mount Union came with the bases loaded as it ripped a double into the left-center field gap to clear the bases and extend their lead from 3-0 to 6-0.
Sophomore Cam Rendell and senior Jackson Curtis posted the base hits for the Eagles in the loss, while six Husson pitchers saw time on the mound.
Junior Connor Abood got the start and lasted just two innings, giving up three hits, six runs (four earned) and four walks. Senior Chris Naylor, sophomore Ryan Gomez and freshman Wyatt Stevens each took the mound in the third inning, mustering just one out between them before senior Ben Taneman took on 2.2 innings of work and retired all eight batters he faced. Sophomore Allen Wheaton toed the slab for the final inning for Husson, allowing two base runners, while surrendering no runs.
The Eagles will return to action two weeks from tomorrow when they travel to Newport, R.I. to take on No. 19 Salve Regina University in a doubleheader with game one's first pitch set for Noon.
