AUBURNDALE. Fla. – The Husson University baseball team got back to .500 on the season after a 9-4 victory over Concordia College (Minn.) on Wednesday evening at Lake Myrtle Park during the 2024 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Husson (2-2) posted the first four runs of Wednesday night's contest, as junior Tanner Evans got things started with a two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded that scored seniors Akira Warren and Jackson Curtis. The Eagles continued their scoring in the top-half of the second as sophomore Hunter Curtis sent a solo home run over the left field fence for his first round-tripper of the season, giving Husson a 3-0 edge. Warren put the Eagles up 4-0 after the top of the second as he doubled to right field with runners on the corners and plated sophomore Cam Rendell.
After seeing its lead get sliced in half during the home portion of the second inning, Husson immediately got those two runs back as Jackson Curtis sent a single back up the middle that allowed Rendell to tally his second run of the night. Evans recorded his third RBI of the game three batters later as he scored Curtis from second after he advanced on freshman Kevin Connolly's hit by pitch.
Concordia (3-3) would get one run back in the bottom of the fourth to bring the deficit to 6-3, but once again the Eagles would strike back as sophomore Keegan Cyr scored the seventh run of the game for Husson from second base after Hunter Curtis reached base due to an error from the Cobbers' shortstop.
The Eagles would tack on two insurance runs in the top of the eighth after Concordia added one of their own in the bottom-half of the fifth. After Connolly was intentionally walked to load the bases for Husson, Evans and freshman Henry Lausier would take back-to-back walks to plate the final two runs of the game for the Eagles.
Rendell and Jackson Curtis each posted three-hit outings to lead the way for the Husson offense, in addition to scoring three runs each, while Warren and Evans both added two base-knocks. Evans tallied four RBIs, while Connolly showcased some great plate-discipline, racking up three walks.
Junior Matt Wallingford got the start for the Eagles, lasting four innings, giving up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks, while striking out two batters. Sophomore Tanner Audyatis got the win in relief of Wallingford, throwing 3.2 innings of shutout-baseball, surrendering four hits and retiring two Cobber batters on strikes. Junior Connor Abood and senior Ryan Robb combined to finish off the final 1.1 innings, allowing no baserunners.
Husson returns to the diamond tonight when it plays Immaculata University at 6:45 p.m. in Davenport, Fla.
