CLEARWATER, Florida – The Husson University women's lacrosse team lost its first of two spring trip games in Florida this week, at the hands of Clark University 11-8, on Tuesday morning.
The Cougars of Clark University scored the opening three goals of the contest, before sophomore Laela Martinez scored a goal and broke the Eagles' drought with 7:23 left in the first quarter.
Husson entered the second quarter of play facing a 4-1 deficit, before the team scored three consecutive goals to tie the game entering the half. Sophomore Gracie Gardner started the second quarter barrage, followed by sophomore Averi Baker capitalizing on a woman-up advantage. Martinez finished-off the run with another goal, tying the Cougars at 4-4, with 2:20 left until halftime.
In the third, Clark struck first early in the period, until Martinez answered back, on an assist from Baker, just 31 seconds later. Clark continued the back and forth nature of the game, scoring two more goals in the third, before Martinez scored another woman-up goal to draw within one.
The Eagles added two more goals in the final quarter of game, once again getting to within one goal, but fell just short of Clark as the Cougars closed the contest scoring two more times in the final five minutes of play. Baker added one of the final two goals, on a nice find from senior Sophia Gomez, followed by junior Natalie Whitten tallying a score of her own with 6:46 left.
Junior Emma Begin was in net for the Eagles throughout the duration of the game, capturing eight saves for the team.
Husson will play Berry College of Georgia next, at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex, on Thursday morning, at 10 a.m.
