DAVENPORT, Florida – The Husson University baseball team fell short in its doubleheader against Marymount University, losing 9-3 in the first game, and 7-5 in the second, at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday.
GAME 1:
In Husson's (1-2) first of two evening games against Marymount (10-0), it was the Saints that jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, a lead that they would not relinquish throughout the ballgame.
While the Eagles responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, sparked by an opening triple that found the left-center gap by sophomore outfielder Hunter Curtis, the team struggled to find their big inning, scoring their three runs one at a time in the first, fourth, and fifth innings.
Husson kept within striking-distance of undefeated Marymount behind a plethora of pitchers, until the Saints ran away with the game in the top of the fifth, tallying five runs on four hits and two walks.
Sophomore Ryan Gomez was the first of eight pitchers on the mound for the Eagles, allowing two earned-runs and getting the team's only strikeout of the game, until being relieved by senior Ryan Penney.
GAME 2:
In the second game of the doubleheader, Husson fell short again after a late surge of three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Much like the opening game, it was close-contest between the two teams until a big inning from the Saints of Marymount.
The Eagles down two runs in the fourth, scored two runs of their own to tie the game. After another extra-base-hit from Curtis, sophomore Cam Rendell reached base on a fielding-error, allowing Curtis to score. Senior captain Akira Warren then hit Rendell home on a single, who first stole second-base, to notch the score at 2-2.
Marymount's big-inning came subsequently after, in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to gain a 6-2 lead.
Husson's late surge then came in the top of the sixth, behind two walks from freshman Henry Lausier, scoring senior Jackson Curtis, and sophomore Colin Marshall, which scored Warren. Sophomore Keegan Cyr then added on with an RBI-single, allowing freshman Kevin Connolly to come home for the team's fifth and final run of the game.
Senior Chris Naylor got the starting-nod for the Eagles, lasting three innings, allowing two hits, four walks and five earned-runs.
