BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University men's lacrosse team dropped a back-and-forth 19-15 battle at home against SUNY Canton in its North Atlantic Conference opener on Saturday.
SUNY Canton (2-3, 1-0 NAC) got on the board at the 13:25 mark in the opening quarter for an early 1-0 lead. Junior
Sean Lyne found senior Matthew Boynton at the 9:55 mark to even the game 1-1 as the Eagles and Roos traded goals throughout the opening quarter. Boynton added his second goal of the quarter minutes later off another assist from Lyne, but Canton came away with a 3-2 lead following the opening 15 minutes of play.
Following a Canton goal to opening the second quarter, Husson scored back-to-back goals, the first from Boynton and the second from junior
Nathan Vibber to even the game at 4-4.
The Roos managed to add a goal to break the Eagles run, but Boynton scored two unassisted goals within 33 seconds to give Husson its first lead of the game at 6-5.
However, SUNY Canton rolled off a four-goal run to end the first half to take a 9-6 lead into the break.
Sophomore
Kolton Gillilan pulled the Eagles within 9-7 with an opening third-quarter score, but the Roos scored three-straight net finders to increase their lead to 12-7.
Boynton and Vibber combined for back-to-back Eagles goals to pull back within 12-9 of SUNY Canton, but five-unanswered goals gave the Roos a commanding 17-9 edge.
Husson managed to outscore the Roos 6-2 over the final 15 minutes of action, but SUNY Canton's late third-quarter run proved to be the difference in 19-15 decision.
Vibber, Gillilan, Boynton and freshman
Aidan Byers all finished with fourth-quarter goals, while Lyne ended the deciding quarter with two goals.
Boyton finished with a team-high seven goals in the loss, while Vibber added three. Lyne tallied two goals and two assists on the afternoon, while freshman
Brad Stolt won 21 of 38 faceoff attempts and finished with 10 ground balls.
Sophomore
Odin Burk finished with 11 saves in net for the Eagles who host SUNY Poly and SUNY Morrisville on Saturday and Sunday for a 1 p.m. and noon matchup, respectively.
