BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's lacrosse team fell to the University of Southern Maine in its home opener, 20-6, at John P. Boucher Field on Wednesday evening.
In a game that was originally scheduled for Feb. 24, the Huskies of USM (3-5) captured the lead three minutes and fifty eight seconds into the contest and never looked back, controlling the game throughout the night.
Husson (3-5) finally broke through on the scoreboard when junior Nathan Vibber scored his 12th goal of the season, off an assist from senior Matt Boynton, with 7:18 remaining in the first quarter.
Freshman Owen Giorgio was the next Eagle in the scoring column after a man-up goal with 9:22 left in the second, via a freshman Drew Clinch assist. Giorgio's goal brought Husson's deficit to a 6-2 score, before the Huskies countered with four unanswered goals to end the half with a 10-2 lead.
The Eagles capitalized on a man-up advantage in the opening seconds of the second half, after a USM cross check penalty that carried over from the second quarter allowed Giorgio to score his second goal of the night, and his fourth of the season, by way of another timely Boynton assist.
After just under 13 minutes passed on the clock, along with five more Husky goals, Boynton created another assist, this time to Clinch, on another man-up score for Husson.
In the final quarter, Boynton found himself an unassisted goal with 8:53 left in the contest, before Sophomore Kolton Gillilan capped off the night for the Eagles, scoring his 17th goal of the season.
Boynton led the Eagles with five points on the night, scoring one goal and four assists, followed by Giorgio who scored two goals on three shots and Clinch who ended the game with a goal and assist.
Husson's next game comes a week from tonight, with a road contest in the team's North Atlantic Conference opener against Thomas College.
