SALEM, Mass. — The Husson University men's lacrosse team came up just short in a fourth-quarter comeback effort on the road against Salem State University, falling 13-9.
Salem State (3-2) managed to get out a 2-0 led on the Eagles in the opening eight minutes of the first quarter before senior
Matt Boynton got Husson on the board with an unassisted goal.
The Vikings added another goal with just over four minutes remaining in the opening quarter, but freshman
Drew Clinch pulled the Eagles within 3-2 off an assist from sophomore
Jacob Sargent.
The second quarter would be all Vikings as they scored three unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead heading in the halftime.
However, Husson answered to open the third quarter, scoring three-straight goals of its own, the first from Sargent from Boynton, the second from junior
Nathan Vibber and the third goal from sophomore
Cohen Trnka from Boynton to pull Husson with 6-5.
Salem State answered Trnka's score, but the sophomore tallied his second goal of the afternoon on a man-up opportunity from Boynton to get the deficit at one.
The Vikings added two more goals over the final six minutes in the third frame to the Eagles one — Vibber added his second of the game — to carry a slight 9-7 edge heading into the deciding fourth quarter.
Following a Salem State goal to begin the fourth, Husson benefited from back-to-back scores the first from Sargent and the second from sophomore Kolton Gillilian to pull back within 10-9 with 7:21 remaining.
However, Salem State ended the game on a 3-0 run to come away with the tightly contested 13-9 decision.
Freshman
Brad Stolt finished the day 12-23 on face-off attempts, while sophomore
Odin Burk stood strong in net for the Eagles recording 17 saves.
Next up, the Eagles will host the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in non-conference action
