BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team cruised to a 87-54 win over Lesley University, led by an all-around team effort that saw four Eagles contributing double-digit points on Friday night in Newman Gymnasium.
From start to finish it was Husson (19-5, 10-3 NAC) in the driver's seat, as the Eagles led for over 18 minutes in the first half. After jumping to an opening 12-4 run, Husson found its success early and often by way of the inside game and the free throw line.
The Eagles outscored Lesley (4-19, 2-11 NAC) by 14 points inside the paint, establishing a presence that also led the team to out-rebound the Lynx 26 to 12. Husson's first-half charge was led by senior big men Jared Balser and Scott Lewis, who both contributed eight first-half points.
While both teams struggled from beyond the arc in the first half, the Eagles made up the difference by flying into transition and capitalizing on 11-fastbreak points, leading to a 37-23 score after the first 20 minutes of play.
Husson blew the floodgates open in the second half, continuing to add to its fastbreak and inside the paint margins. Senior guard Jeremy Moronta pushed the pace throughout the game, stuffing the stat sheet with 11 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds and five steals.
Balser, who threw down a thunderous rim-to-rim dunk to ignite the Eagle crowd, finished the contest with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Graduate student Derek Collin added 12 points and eight rebounds of his own, while Lewis was able to finish with 10 total points.
The Eagles host Lesley again on Saturday for Senior Day, looking to end their regular season on a three-game win streak before potentially hosting the North Atlantic Conference East Division Championship.
