Men’s basketball draws No. 8 NYU in NCAA tournament opening round

| By:

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team is set to travel to New York University for the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.

Husson will battle NYU at 6:45 p.m. on Friday evening inside the John A. Paulson Center on the Violets' campus, with Tufts University and Stockton University playing the other game at that first round location, tipping off at 4:15 p.m.

The Eagles captured the North Atlantic Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after defeating SUNY Cobleskill 80-70 this past Saturday afternoon in the NAC title game. Senior Jeremy Moronta was named tournament MVP after averaging 13 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and more than 2.5 steals during the conference tournament.

Freshman Andre McCauley also earned a spot on the all-tournament team thanks to an impressive shooting performance in the NAC championship, while sophomore Eric Ahlers claimed the final all-tournament spot for Husson after shooting 14-24 from three-point range during the NAC tournament.

The Violets captured their first University Athletics Association conference championship after defeating Brandeis University 74-68 in the conference title game. NYU is led by graduate student Spencer Freedman, who averages 18 points per contest and nearly six assists a game.

The Violets are the fifth ranked three-point percentage offense in all of Division III, shooting the ball at nearly 39.5% from beyond the arc, which will test Husson's No. 3 Division III ranked field goal percentage defense.

The winners of Husson-NYU and Stockton-Tufts will meet the following day for the right to advance to the sectional round of the NCAA tournament.
