DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Husson University men's basketball team completed a perfect 2-0 weekend at the Florida Sunshine Shootout with a 74-60 win over UMass Boston on Sunday evening at Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Husson (8-5) fell behind to UMass Boston (6-3) on the first play of the game, but managed to take its first and only lead of the contest at the 14:56 mark on a layup from graduate student Jeremy Moronta.
From that point in the opening half on it was all Eagles, as the Beacons cut the Husson lead down to 16-12 on a three-pointer from Ralph Laurent, but the Eagles countered with an 20-5 run over the next seven minutes of action to take a lead of 19 on a layup from freshman Connor Heald.
Husson cruised for the remainder of the opening half and took a 38-21 lead into the locker room.
Junior Ty Henke led the way for the Eagles in the opening half by following up his hot shooting performance on yesterday's win with 11 first-half points on 4-5 shooting, including 3-3 from beyond the arc.
Junior Gil Matondo also scored in double-digits with 10 points, while also grabbing six rebounds and blocking two shots.
The Eagles shot 38.5% from the floor in the opening half and held UMass Boston to just six made field goals and a 22.2% shooting clip.
Husson never faced any real pressure from the Beacons in the second half, as UMass Boston could only cut the lead to as little as eight with 2:52 remaining, but the Eagles tallied the final six points of the contest to come away with two commanding wins to start the second half of their season.
Matondo and Henke tied for the game-high in points with 17 each, while Matondo finished one rebound shy of a double-double and Henke finished 6-9 from the floor and 5-7 from beyond the arc.
Heald put together a great performance on the glass for Husson, as he posted a 10-point, 19-rebound double-double, which included nine offensive rebounds in what was a stellar rebounding game for the Eagles overall.
Husson posted a 36.5% shooting clip for the game, connecting on 13-19 free throw attempts, while holding the Beacons to just a 30% shooting rate and outrebounding UMass Boston 59-41 for the game.
The Eagles will return home and get back to North Atlantic Conference play on Jan. 6 when they host Vermont State University Lyndon at 6 p.m.
