BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team capped off a perfect 2-0 weekend following a wire-to-wire victory against the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Saturday afternoon by a score of 88-52 at Newman Gymnasium.
Freshman Lilly Roy and senior Lauren Cook gave Husson (3-7) an immediate 5-0 lead on a layup from Roy and a three-pointer by Cook and the Eagles were off and running.
Fort Kent (6-4) did manage to get 10 of the next 15 points to knot the game up at 10, but a 10-4 outburst from Husson to end the quarter regained a 20-14 edge for the Eagles at the end of one quarter.
Husson continued its late momentum to begin the second quarter, as it outscored the Bengals 21-2 over the first five minutes of the period to break the game open. Freshman Alana Seward came alive during the five-minute stretch, tallying nine points, four assists and two steals during the run.
The Eagles would build their lead up to as many as 30 on a layup from graduate student Trinity Montigny and would take a 50-22 lead into halftime.
Husson continued to roll in the second half, tying with Fort Kent 17-17 in the third quarter, before outpacing the Bengals 21-13 in the final period.
Montigny and Seward led the Eagles in scoring with 11 points apiece, while Seward added four assists, in addition to Roy posting 10 points.
Junior Laela Martinez had an all-around good game for Husson, tallying four points, four steals and seven assists.
As a unit, the Eagles shot 40% from the floor and forced the Bengals into 31 turnovers, which resulted in 33 points for Husson.
The Eagles held a commanding edge on the glass, out rebounding Fort Kent 55-42 for the game, while recording 21 assists compared to just eight for the Bengals.
Husson will look to keep its momentum going after it breaks for Christmas, returning to action on Dec. 29 in St. Petersburg, Florida against Emory University in the St. Pete Classic at 5 p.m.
