BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team won its fourth-consecutive game on Saturday afternoon and rolled to a 91-71 win over the University of Maine at Fort Kent at Newman Gymnasium in non-conference action.
A back-and-forth opening first half led to a 26-24 lead for UMFK (5-9) at the 5:44 mark seven lead changes and three ties heading into the under-eight media timeout.
A 10-1 run from Husson (6-5) out of the timeout gave it sole possession of the lead with 3:37 remaining in the opening 20 minutes and closed the half on an 18-8 run overall to take a 42-34 lead into the locker room.
Sophomore Andre McCauley paced the Eagles in the opening half with 11 points on 5-5 shooting, while senior Riles Neff added eight points and five assists.
As a team, Husson shot over 53% from the floor and more than doubled the Bengals on the boards, holding a 22-10 edge on the board after 20 minutes.
The Eagles continued their hot shooting in the second half and grew their lead to double digits on several occasions, leading 71-61 with 6:53 remaining.
10-straight points from Husson over the next two-plus minutes all-but put the game away, as five points from sophomore Tope Alao orchestrated the push for the Eagles.
Husson rolled to the finish to put the finishing touches on its sixth win of the season.
Neff's monster second half ended his game with 29 total points, including 21 in the final 20 minutes, in addition to seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals, while shooting 5-7 from three-point land.
McCauley finished an efficient shooting performance with 16 points on 7-9 shooting, while Alao added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, in addition to graduate student Jeremy Moronta contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Eagles shot over 58% from the floor as a team, including nearly 32% from three-point land, in addition to 7-9 from the foul line.
Husson dished out 26 assists on 39 made field goals and won the rebounding battle 43-27 over the Bengals.
The Eagles will be back in action after Christmas break when they compete in the Florida Sunshine Shootout against Norwich University in Daytona Beach, Florida on Dec. 28 at 8 p.m.
