BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team lost in its home-opener on Sunday afternoon, as Otterbein University defeated the Eagles 61-39 at Newman Gymnasium in non-conference action.
Otterbein (2-2) was in firm control from the opening tip, as the Cardinals opened up an 8-0 lead just over a minute into the contest on back-to-back threes and two foul shots from Kyla Irby and held Husson (0-4) scoreless for the first three-plus minutes.
After taking a 10-point lead into the second quarter, Otterbein kept the Eagles off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes from the end of the first quarter to midway the second quarter, allowing the Cardinals to stretch their lead to 20 points.
Husson managed to show some fight later on in the second quarter, cutting the deficit down to 13 at the halftime break.
It was all Otterbein in the second half, as it stretched the lead back up to 20 points early on in the third quarter and cruised to a non-conference win in the first-ever matchup between the two programs.
Freshman Alyssa Harris and senior Hannah Richards led the Eagles offensively, as they tallied six points each.
Husson struggled offensively, shooting just 20% from the floor as a unit, in addition to making just one three-point field goal during the game on 19 attempts.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a non-conference contest scheduled for 1 p.m.
