CASTINE, Maine – The Husson University women's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit on Saturday afternoon to force a 2-2 tie at Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference play.
The defending NAC Champions struck twice in the first 11 minutes of play to quickly open up a 2-0 lead on Husson (5-5-1, 4-0-1 NAC).
Maine Maritime (4-4-2, 3-2-1 NAC) found its first goal in the eighth minute of play thanks to Kirra Magaña, who posted her 12th goal of the season to get the Mariners on the board.
Hadley Stoddard followed Magaña's lead less than two minutes later, as she doubled the lead for Maine Maritime at the 10:13 mark.
The Eagles cut the Mariner lead in half in the 26th minute, as sophomore Rylee Speed played a corner kick inside the six-yard box, which found the head of senior Natalie Aviolla and flew past the Maine Maritime goalie to get Husson on the board.
After the Mariners carried their lead into and out of the halftime break, the Eagles found the equalizer in the 62nd minute on another corner kick from Speed, as her long cross found the foot of a streaking senior Mackenzie Lambert, who was able to volley the ball into the back of the net to even the game up at two.
Husson had two shots turned away by the Maine Maritime goalie in the final 28 minutes of action, as neither team was able to find the game-winning goal.
The Eagles held a 16-4 edge in shots for the game, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal, in addition to a 9-5 lead in corner kicks.
Junior Madison Weigler was in net for Husson and turned away one of the three shots that were put on goal by the Mariners.
The Eagles will return to the field on Tuesday when they travel to Colby College to take on the Mules in a 6 p.m. contest.
