Men’s soccer falls to Maine Maritime in road, NAC action

CASTINE, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team dropped a North Atlantic Conference contest to Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-0 at Ritchie Field in Castine.

Maine Maritime (4-5-1, 3-3 NAC) looked to get off to a fast start in Saturday's contest, as it was granted a penalty kick in the third minute of play, but Gabriel Toledo had his shot turned away by sophomore Samuel Bermudez to keep the game scoreless.

Husson (5-4-1, 2-3 NAC) was able to generate three chances on goal in the opening half, but the Mariners held strong and sent the game into halftime tied at zero.

The Eagles mustered two more quality chances early on in the second half before Maine Maritime took control of the game.

Bermudez was able to keep the Mariners off the scoreboard despite a flurry of chances within a three-minute span, but Maine Maritime's persistence paid off, as James Baur was able to get a shot past Bermudez in the 63rd minute to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead.

Husson had multiple chances to even the contest up, as the game approached an end, but the Eagles were unable to equalize and Maine Maritime put the game out of reach in the 87th minute, as Baur secured his second goal of the game to make it 2-0.

The Mariners outshot the Eagles 15-13 for the game, but Husson held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Bermudez turned away five of the seven Maine Maritime shots that he was faced with in his 90 minutes of action.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the University of New England in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
