BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University volleyball team stood tall against Maine Maritime Academy in Friday's 3-0 loss at home.
Husson (3-9, 1-1 NAC) held its own against one of the top teams in the North Atlantic Conference on Friday evening battling the Mariners to a 26-24 opening set loss. MMA (6-7, 2-0 NAC) and the Eagles traded points throughout the opening set with Husson taking a slight 18-14 edge.
However, three-straight MMA points saw the Eagles lead trimmed to 19-17 before tied the match 21-21 and took a 24-21 lead late. Husson didn't go down without a fight, facing set point the Eagles rolled off three points to tie the set 24-24, but MMA came away with back-to-back points for the 26-24 decision.
As the both did in the first set, Husson and MMA traded points early in the second set with the Mariners holding a slight 15-11 edge. The Eagles would slowly chip away at the Mariners lead before pulling within 20-19. Late in the set, Husson came within 23-21 of the Mariners, but MMA managed to come away with a tough-fought 25-23 set-two win.
In the final set of Friday's conference showdown, both teams traded opening points with MMA leading 13-11 before rolling up a 5-0 run to push its advantage to 18-11.
Husson would try to come back in the set, cutting the lead to 20-15, but another 5-1 run closed out the match and gave the Mariners a 25-16 set win.
Sophomore
Janna Preskorn finished with a game-high 13 kills while hitting .242 from the outside with just five attack errors.
Senior's
Alexa Beal,
Cam Schweitzer and freshman Kimberly Daniel each added three kills, while senior
Alyvia McIntyre posted a game-high 22 assists.
Beal also finished with a game-high four service aces, while senior
Beatrice Tursi, freshman Amanda Morse and McIntyre scooped up six digs apiece.
Husson will host Thomas College on Saturday for senior day.
