BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team dropped a non-conference matchup to No. 2 Tufts University on Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field on senior day by a score of 3-0.
Husson (8-6-3) played the nationally-ranked Jumbos (11-0-3) tough for the opening half-hour of play, forcing Tufts into contested shots and keeping its defensive line together.
The Jumbos struck twice in the span of 90 seconds to instantly capture a 2-0 lead over the Eagles in the first half.
After a corner kick was played into the box the ball found Taylor Feinberg near the goal line on the left side of the goal. Feinberg played a pass back to Ben Verner at about the penalty-spot area and Verner blasted a shot into the top-right corner to open the scoring.
Bijan Akhtarzandi-Das doubled the lead for Tufts, as a throw-in was sent deep into the box by Mateo Bargagna and found the head of Feinberg, who skimmed the ball onto the head of Akhtarzandi-Das and into the top of the goal to make it 2-0 Jumbos.
Tufts would find a third goal in the 62nd minute, as James Flagg sent a corner kick from Liam Gerken into the back of the net to close the scoring at 3-0.
The Jumbos held a 12-2 shots advantage for the game, including 6-0 in shots on goal, in addition to 8-0 on corner kicks.
Sophomores Garret Jordan and Samuel Bermudez split time in goal for Husson, as Jordan did not make a save in 45 minutes, while Bermudez turned away one shot in his 45 minutes of play.
Prior to the start of the game, the Eagles honored their senior class of Pablo Maroto, Pedro Molina, Mario Alvarez, Alejandro Mora, Nate Chamberland and Florian Gasser.
Husson will now take part in the North Atlantic Conference East Division Championship, which starts this Saturday at Thomas College. The Eagles will battle Thomas in the opening round with the time of the game to be announced on Monday.
