WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team fell to Thomas College in the North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinals by a penalty shootout score of 4-3, following a 1-1 score in regulation, on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.
Thomas (12-1-3) found the opening goal in Saturday's contest, as Joshua Joseph sent home a pass from Micky Woodrow in the 27th minute to put the Terriers up 1-0.
Senior Mario Alvarez drew Husson (8-7-3) even after he scored from the penalty spot in the 35th minute to send the game into the half tied up at one.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half, in addition to both overtime periods, as the game would head to a penalty shootout.
With Husson kicking first, senior Florian Gasser stepped up and calmly sent the ball into the right corner to put the Eagles ahead, but he would be matched by Joseph, who knotted the shootout back up.
After back-to-back misses from sophomore Alejandro Castellanos and David Ivarsson, Alvarez and Tre Burgess sent the shootout into the fourth round of kicks tied up at two with consecutive makes.
A miss from senior Alejandro Mora allowed the Terriers to take the lead on a make by Woodrow, but senior Pedro Molina kept the Eagles alive with a make on the fifth kick for Husson.
Andrew Hodgins was the final taker for Thomas and he sent the Terriers into the East Division title game with his right-corner goal, ending the shootout 4-3 in favor of Thomas.
The Terriers held a 16-13 edge in shots for the game, while Husson held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams took nine corner kicks.
Sophomore Samuel Bermudez manned the net for the Eagles in regulation and overtime, making six saves on seven shots from the Terriers, while sophomore Wessel De Wit took over in the penalty shootout.
With the loss, the season has come to an end for the men's soccer team.
