BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's soccer team picked up a huge North Atlantic Conference win on Wednesday evening over Maine Maritime Academy by a score of 2-0 at Boucher Field.
In a battle for first-place in the NAC East Division standings, Husson (9-7-1, 7-1-1 NAC) and Maine Maritime (7-5-3, 5-3-1 NAC) went toe-to-toe under the lights at Boucher Field.
Husson generated the first real scouring opportunity of the contest in the fifth minute of play, as junior Madison Higgins had her shot blocked by a Maine Maritime defender and the ensuing opportunity for sophomore Rylee Speed had the goalkeeper beat, but the ball hit of the outside of the left post and went harmlessly out of bounds for a goal kick.
The Eagles capitalized on a scoring chance in the 24th minute, as senior Natalie Aviolla sent a ball from the middle of the field to the right corner and found sophomore Olivia Charles. Charles sent a one-time ball back into the middle and graduate student Lindsey Russell managed to put a shot past the reach of the Mariner goalkeeper and into the right corner to give Husson a 1-0 lead.
Husson would have another chance to find the scoring column late in the opening half, but a shot from senior Caitlin Haley hit off the post, as the game went into halftime at 1-0 in favor of the Eagles.
Neither team generated much offense for the majority of the second half, as the Husson defense had a strangle-hold on Maine Maritime's offense, which is led by the fourth-highest individual goal-scorer in the country for Division III, Kirra Magaña.
The Eagles found an insurance goal in the 82nd minute from junior Addi Laslie, as she played a deflection off of a Mariner defender down the left side of the field and made a nice cutback move to get an open shooting lane and blasted the ball into the top-right corner to extend the Husson lead to 2-0 late in the game.
Senior goalie Hannah Kenney and the Husson defense would hold on and pick up the 2-0 conference win.
The Eagles outshot Maine Maritime 16-3 for the game, including 3-1 in shots on goal, in addition to holding a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Kenney earned the shutout in net for Husson and turned away the lone shot that the Mariners placed on goal.
The Eagles will conclude their regular season schedule on Saturday when they travel to the University of Maine at Farmington for a 2 p.m. NAC showdown.
