Five different players post goals in women’s soccer’s NAC victory over Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University women's soccer team maintained its spot atop the North Atlantic Conference after defeating Thomas College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-0 in Waterville.

Husson (7-7-1, 6-1-1 NAC) pelted the Thomas (1-9-1, 1-6-1 NAC) goal with 28 shots in the opening half of play, but wasn't able to break through until the 43:42 mark of the first half, as freshman Hailey Tarbox received the ball from sophomore Olivia Charles just inside the 18-yard box. The freshman was able to get out of a crowd of Terrier defenders and blast a shot that just snuck between the hands of the goalkeeper and under the crossbar to send the Eagles into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Senior Katie Benson doubled the lead for Husson less than five minutes into the second half, as she placed a penalty kick just under the hand of the Thomas goalie after senior Natalie Aviolla drew a foul in the box to set up the penalty.

Charles found the scoring column in the 57th minute, as she was able to follow up a shot from senior Kate Harriman, which was blocked by a Thomas defender, and fire the ball into the top-right corner and give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Aviolla gave Husson another chance at the penalty spot about ten minutes later, as she was once again taken down inside the box and she blasted the ball into the left side of the goal on the ensuing penalty kick.

Junior Devon St. Louis concluded the scoring in the 73rd minute when she followed-up her own shot off of a corner kick and sent the ball into the top of the net to bring the game to 5-0.

Husson outshot Thomas 48-1 for the game, including 26-0 in shots on goal, in addition to a 14-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Madison Weigler picked up the shutout in goal for the Eagles, as she was not forced to make a save in the contest.

Husson is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Keene State for senior day at 1 p.m.
