WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against Thomas College on Saturday evening in North Atlantic Conference at Smith Field in Waterville.
Thomas (9-1-3, 6-0-2 NAC) struck first in Saturday's pivotal NAC showdown, as Tre Burgess was able to just strike the ball over the goal line on a corner kick which was flicked across the middle and onto the foot of a waiting Burgess to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead just over four minutes in.
Both teams pounded the opposing team's goalkeeper with shots, as each side tallied three shots on goal in the opening frame, but it remained 1-0 Thomas at the halftime break.
Husson (8-4-3, 5-3-1 NAC) was granted a free kick chance just outside the 18-yard box after a handball on the Terriers, which presented senior Mario Alvarez with a golden chance to even the contest up.
The native of Spain did just that, as she managed to curl the ball around the wall of Thomas defenders and just into the top-left corner of the goal to knot the game up with less than 25 minutes to play.
The Eagles would have one final quality chance on net, as sophomore Miguel Duborjal was sent a through-ball inside the 18-yard box, but Duborjal's shot was turned away by the Thomas goalkeeper to keep the contest tied up.
Neither side was able to find the winner in this tense rivalry matchup, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Husson held a 16-11 edge in shots for the game, including 8-5 in shots on goal, while Thomas maintained a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Wessel De Wit made four saves in his 90 minutes between the posts for the Eagles.
Husson is back in action on Wednesday, as it will host Maine Maritime Academy at 5 p.m.
