FARMINGTON, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team earned a hard-fought, road North Atlantic Conference victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 2-0 at Lieb Field.
Following a scoreless first half of play between Husson (8-4-2, 5-3 NAC) and Farmington (5-6-3, 4-4 NAC) that saw just one chance on goal between the two teams, it was the Eagles who found the scoring column in the 55th minute.
Sophomore Alejandro Castellanos took possession of a bouncing ball on the right side of the field and cut towards the middle. He placed a through-ball just out of the reach of a Farmington defender and found the foot of fellow sophomore Carsen Cyr, who sent the ball into the back of the net to give Husson a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles would double their lead less than 10 minutes later, as senior Pedro Molina capitalized on a miskick from a Beaver defender and he was able to blast the ball past the Farmington goalie and into the goal to extend the Husson lead.
The Beavers were able to generate just one chance on net for the remainder of the contest, as the Eagle defense posted its second-consecutive shutout.
Farmington managed to outshoot Husson by a 7-6 margin, in addition to taking seven corner kicks for the match, compared to zero for the Eagles, but both teams recorded two shots on goal.
Sophomore Wessel De Wit earned his third-consecutive victory in net for Husson, in addition to his second-straight shutout, as he stopped both shots on goal in the game.
The Eagles will be back on the road on Saturday when they battle Thomas College at 6 p.m. in Waterville.
