Gasser scores only goal to push men’s soccer past Lesley

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team captured its second one-goal victory in as many days on Sunday afternoon, as it defeated Lesley University 1-0 at Boucher Field in North Atlantic Conference action.

Aside from a shot courtesy of junior Arik Weinstein in the second minute of action, Husson (7-4-2, 4-3 NAC) and Lesley (3-9-1, 2-4-1 NAC) played a calm first 15-plus minutes of soccer on a sunny afternoon.

The Eagles turned the tide in the 16th minute, as senior Florian Gasser was taken out in the penalty box by a Lynx defender and earned a penalty kick for Husson. Gasser took the ensuing penalty try, which was saved by the Lesley goalkeeper, but the ball bounced right back to Gasser and he drilled the ball into the open goal to give Husson a 1-0 lead.

Husson continued its pursuit offensively for the remainder of the opening half, but saw numerous chances sail high or wide of the goal, as the game went into halftime at 1-0 in favor of the Eagles.

While the Eagles were unable to add onto their lead during the remainder of the contest, their defense limited Lesley to just three shots for the contest, in addition to no shots on goal.

Husson was able to salt away the remaining half and come away with a sweep of the Lynx on the weekend and get back above the .500 mark in conference play.

The Eagles outshot Lesley 20-3 for the game, but managed just a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal, while mustering nine corner kicks for the match compared to just two for the Lynx.

Sophomore Wessel De Wit earned his second shutout of the season in net for Husson and was not forced to make a save in his 90 minutes of action.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to the University of Maine at Farmington for a NAC contest at 3:30 p.m.
