BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team earned a 3-2, come-from-behind, victory on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference play over Lesley University at Boucher Field.
Lesley (3-8-1, 2-3-1 NAC) found the back of the net in the 22nd minute of play to open the scoring, as Anthony DeNicola took a touch past the Husson (6-4-2, 3-3 NAC) defense and lined-up a left-footed strike from just outside the 18-yard box and managed to curl the ball past the outstretched hand of sophomore Wessel De Wit and into the left corner of the goal to give the Lynx a 1-0 edge.
With less than five minutes left in the opening half of play, Husson looked to even up the score on a free kick opportunity from senior Mario Alvarez and the upperclassman continued to execute his set-piece chances, as he found the foot of a streaking senior Pedro Molina, who volleyed the ball into the back of the net to send the game into the halftime break knotted up at one.
Lesley caught the Husson defense in transition to regain its lead, as DeNicola played the ball down the left wing off of a deflected clearance attempt and sent a low cross into the box which found Nick Wadleigh, who snuck a shot just under the crossbar and gave the Lynx a 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes left to play.
The Eagles struck back quickly however, as it was Molina assisting on Alvarez's goal this time, as Molina found Alvarez near the top of the box and the Madrid, Spain native rifled a shot, which deflected off of the Lesley goalkeeper and into the back of the net to tie the game at two just over a minute after the Lynx regained the lead.
Husson found the game-winner at the 75:06 mark, as it was once again Molina and Alvarez combining for the goal. Alvarez took a free kick from the right side of the 18-yard box and found the head of Molina at about the six-yard line and Molina secured a brace, as he headed the ball into the right corner.
The defense of the Eagles didn't allow Lesley a chance in the final 15 minutes of play and held on for the crucial conference victory.
Husson held a 12-6 edge in shots during the game, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, as well as a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
De Wit made two saves in net for the Eagles, including a brilliant kick-save during a one-on-one opportunity for the Lynx during the second half of play.
Husson will look to complete a weekend sweep of Lesley tomorrow afternoon when it battles the Lynx at 12 p.m. at Boucher Field.
