Men’s soccer battles Emerson to draw in hard-fought contest

Story Links

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team battled Emerson College to a 2-2 draw at Boucher Field on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest.

Husson (1-0-1) wasted no time getting in the scoring column as junior Mario Alvarez secured his second goal in as many games when he put home a penalty kick in the third minute after fellow junior Florian Gasser was taken down in the box by the Emerson (0-0-2) goalie.

The Eagles would look to take that 1-0 edge into the halftime break, but the Lions would strike back in the 32nd minute when Theodore Bushara headed-home a cross from Cade Mallett to even the score up before the half.

Not many chances were accumulated for the majority of the second half until the 85th minute. Husson looked to have scored the game-winner when junior Pedro Molina placed a low shot into the bottom left corner off of a free kick cross from sophomore Miguel Morales to give Husson back the lead.

The Eagle defense would look to preserve its 2-1 margin with less than six minutes left but would fall 16 seconds short of that as Aaron Tyler would rocket home a right-footed shot into the top left corner to rescue a tie for Emerson.

Junior Alex Rechsteiner manned the net for Husson and was forced to make two saves during the game.

"That was a tough result for us," said head men's soccer coach Gavin Penny. "The lads feel like it was two points dropped rather than one gained, but we have to take the positives from it. We changed the shape a little and it worked very well. Everyone that played dug in hard and put in a real shift. We have been working incredibly hard to show that we can go toe-to-toe with the top teams in New England and Emerson is one of them. They played some great football and have a talented team. But for our part, I thought we were very good and quite unfortunate not to have gotten the win. We have started to season well and we will hope to continue the form in the next game."

The men's soccer will hit the road for two-consecutive non-conference games starting next week. First up for the Eagles is a Wednesday trip to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester State University. Kick-off for this non-conference duel is set for 5 p.m.
