WORCESTER, Mass. – The Husson University men's soccer team secured a second tie in as many games as the Eagles earned a 1-1 draw against Worcester State University on Wednesday evening at John F. Coughlin Field.
The Lacers struck first in the ninth minute as Wilber Garcia took advantage of a bouncing ball inside the 18-yard box and placed a low shot past Husson's junior goalkeeper Alex Rechsteiner to give Worcester State the early lead.
The Eagles found the equalizer in the 44th minute as freshman Hugo Llopiz headed a perfectly placed free kick from junior Mario Alvarez over the Lacer goalkeeper's head and just under the crossbar to knot the game back up at one.
Neither team was able to find the winner in the second half as this equally-played contest ended in a draw.
Worcester State held a 14-13 lead in the shots category, while both teams placed six shots on target.
Rechsteiner stood between the posts for Husson and was forced to make five saves.
"We were not at our best today," said head men's soccer coach Gavin Penny. "I definitely think the weather conditions played a factor early in the game. We were too slow in moving the ball and couldn't really get anything going. We conceded yet another sloppy goal, something that we will need to fix. That being said, I think we showed good character to get ourselves back into the match. The second half opened up a little bit and I thought we were better. The opposition were resolute in their defending and made it hard for us, but we weren't clinical enough in the final third. It's still early days. We have had a decent start against some very good teams. We play arguably the toughest game on our schedule in Bowdoin on Sunday."
The men's soccer team faces a tough test on Sunday as they will travel to Brunswick to take on No. 6 nationally ranked Bowdoin College in a non-conference contest with kick-off set for 12 p.m.
