BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University football team survived a last-minute two-point conversion attempt from Anna Maria College to capture a 50-49 win on Saturday afternoon at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex in a game that saw the two teams combine for over 1,000 yards of total offense.
It was the Amcats (2-2) who found the scoreboard first as Anna Maria's quarterback, Ryan Russell, connected on a deep pass to receiver Deandre Wallace in the Eagle's end zone to give Anna Maria a 6-0 lead midway through the opening quarter.
Husson (3-1) would respond right away with a touchdown of its own, as junior Nason Berthelette would scoop up a short kickoff at the Eagle's 16-yard line and would carry the ball down the left sideline and to the house as he knotted the game back up at six.
After an Amcat's field goal, senior quarterback Nic Visser would lead Husson on an eight-play, 68-yard drive that would end with Visser doing the job himself, as he punched the ball up the middle from one yard out to give the Eagles a 13-9 advantage. The drive was highlighted by a 29-yard completion from Visser to junior receiver Mwanza Fitzpatrick that put Husson in prime scoring position.
Anna Maria would continue the high-scoring opening half as Russell would connect with Eric Pino for a 13-yard touchdown, as Russell's second touchdown of the day through the air would give the Amcats the lead back 15-13.
The two teams would trade touchdown drives to end the first half as it was Husson who would get things started. Junior running back Elijah Garnett would set the tone of the next drive for the Eagles as he ripped off an 18-yard run to immediately put Husson in Anna Maria territory. With Visser working the intermediate passing game and Garnett picking up timely yards on the ground, the Eagles would once again regain possession of the lead as Garnett would record a 2-yard rushing touchdown to make the game 21-15.
Russell and the Amcats would be the ones who would take the lead into the halftime break as Rusell tallied his third passing touchdown of the first half with 1:20 left, as he found Uthman Ajia from four yards away.
Husson's final drive of the first half would be shut down by Anna Maria as Visser was intercepted by Jaquez Davis with no time left.
The Eagles connected on a long touchdown to open the second 30 minutes, as Visser floated a long pass to junior receiver Ja'Quan Myles on just the second play from scrimmage, which resulted in Myles regaining the lead for Husson with a 61-yard touchdown reception.
After forcing the Amcats to punt on their next drive, the Eagles would score their second-consecutive touchdown to start the second half as Garnett would continue to be a workhorse on the ground and would rack up 57 yards rushing on the ensuing drive, including his second touchdown on the day, which came from the Anna Maria two-yard line.
With the Amcats needing a response, Russell would convert on his second 50-plus yard passing touchdown of the game as he hooked up with Mark Johnson-Morgan on a 50-yard touchdown pass to bring Anna Maria to within 36-29.
The Amcats would do as the Eagles did to them, as they also would score their second-straight touchdown after forcing Husson into its first punt of the game. Anna Maria would score its first and only rushing touchdown of the game as Jamal Cariglia would tie the game up at 36 apiece as he scampered in for a 14-yard touchdown.
The Eagles would open the fourth quarter with a touchdown drive of their own as Garnett would convert on his third touchdown of the afternoon, as he galloped up the middle from the Amcats 20-yard line to put Husson back in front 43-36.
Anna Maria would continue to claw its way back into the game as Russell would cash in on his fifth touchdown pass of the game as Wallace hauled in a pass from 23 yards away to tie the game back up once again at 43.
Garnett and junior tight end Cullen Casey would help lead the Eagles on their final touchdown drive of the day, as it was Garnett who found paydirt from 10 yards out to give Husson a 50-43 lead with just over two and half minutes left.
The Eagles put the Amcats in a tough position on their final drive and looked to have the game in their grasp as a sack from senior defensive lineman Brandon Young forced Anna Maria into a fourth-and-12 situation, but the Amcats would convert and would eventually tally another long touchdown to bring the score to 50-49.
Anna Maria would elect to go for a two-point conversion but would come up short as senior defensive back Alex Brown would prevent the Amcat's receiver from breaking the plane of the end zone and would preserve the lead for Husson.
Casey would recover the ensuing onside kick from Anna Maria and the Eagles would wind the clock to zero after two-consecutive kneel downs to earn the 50-49 win.
Visser finished an efficient day through the air as he connected on 21 of his 25 pass attempts for a total of 239 yards and one touchdown.
Garnett recorded his fourth-straight 100-yard rushing performance to start the season, as he concluded his day with 159 yards and his four touchdowns runs. In addition, Garnett also surpassed the 1,000-yard plateau for his career and became the 11th 1,000-yard rusher in program history.
Casey hauled in nine receptions for 98 yards on the day to lead the Husson receivers, while Myles caught four passes for 91 yards, in addition to his touchdown reception.
Senior linebacker Tucker Buzzell was once again an anchor for the Eagle defense as he tallied 14 total tackles during the game, including six solo stops. Buzzell also made some history with his performance as he secured his 300th career tackle in the victory and became just the third Eagle ever to record 300 or more tackles in a career.
Husson will play its only Friday contest of the season next week as it hosts its final non-conference game of the year with Dean College making the trip to Bangor. Kick-off for this contest is set for 6 p.m.
