BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University football team put its foot on the gas early and didn't let off in its 75-17 lopsided victory over Dean College Friday evening, while setting the program record for the most points scored in a game.
Â
Husson (4-1) benefited from a long return by junior
Nason Berthelette and a Bulldogs penalty that put the Eagles in excellent field position at the Dean 16-yard line on their first drive. The following play, junior
Elijah Garnett scored from 16-yard out on a sweep to the right to give Husson a 6-0 lead.Â
Â
Dean (1-4) drove 64 yards on seven plays on its first drive, scoring from 33 yards out to take a 7-6 advantage following an extra-point attempt.Â
Â
The Eagles answered the Bulldogs score with a five-play, 65-yard drive highlighted, by a back of the end zone catch by junior
Cullen Casey from senior
Nic Visser to give Husson a 13-7 edge.Â
Â
On Husson's following possession, Garnett broke away on a 70-yard TD run for his second touchdown of the game and increase the Eagles advantage to 20-7.
Â
Visser connected on his second passing touchdown to Casey on the Eagles next possession and Garnett bested his 70-yard run with a 77-yard touchdown run on Husson's fifth possession of the game for his third score.Â
Â
The Bulldogs pulled with 33-14 with 7:17 remaining in the opening half, but Visser hit sophomore
Ashton Navarrete on a 15-yard pass to give Husson a 40-14 lead heading into the half.Â
Â
Following a Dean three-and-out to begin the second half, Garnett crossed the goal line for his fourth touchdown of the game to run the score to 47-14, matching a career-high with four touchdowns set against Anna Maria College earlier this season.Â
Â
Dean added a field goal midway through the third quarter to cut the deficit to 47-17, but the Eagles rolled off four-straight scores to close out the game. Sophomore
Jed Lober ripped off back-to-back touchdowns runs of 76 and six yards in consecutive possessions. Â
Â
Additionally, sophomore
Max Clark connected with sophomore
Caleb Solomon from 39-yards out for his first collegiate passing touchdown and Solomon's first collegiate score. Freshman
Ayman Naser trucked two defenders to score from 15 yards out for the final Husson score of the evening.Â
Â
Garnett finished with a career-high 250 yards on the ground on 13 attempts and four touchdowns, while Lober tallied 95 yards and two scores on the ground. Garnett's 250 yards on 13 carries broke the record for yards per carry with 19.2, breaking a seven-year-old record set by John Smith against Anna Maria College in 2017. Furthermore, Garnett's 250 tied for the eighth-most rushing yards in a game in program history and his 76-yard rush tied for the fifth longest rushing touchdown.Â
Â
Visser added 145 yards through the air on 12 of 16 passing with three scores, while Clark connected on 4-4 passes for 97 yards.Â
Â
Junior
Ja'Quan Myles finished with three catches for 59 yards, while Casey made the most of his three grabs for 30 yards, scoring twice.
Â
Defensively, senior
Tucker Buzzell racked up a team-high 10 stops, while junior
Ricky Hendrix and sophomore
Evan Bourget each recorded interceptions in the victory and sophomore Bryce Buzzell forced a fumble.Â
Â
Husson will get a much-needed bye week before turning its attention to its Commonwealth Coast Conference season opener against Curry College on Oct. 14 at home.Â
