PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team cruised to its second consecutive win on Wednesday afternoon as it defeated the University of Maine at Presque Isle 6-1 in non-conference action.
Husson (3-2-3) dominated the first 45 minutes of play as they peppered UMPI (0-5) with 12 total shots, including eight shots on net. The Eagles finally had a breakthrough after 30 minutes of action as junior Pedro Molina tallied his second goal of the season when he blasted the ball into the top right corner of the goal off of a cross from fellow junior Florian Gasser.
Husson would carry that 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but would be quick to expand on it to start the second half as three goals just over five minutes into the half would break the game open for the Eagles.
Freshman Leonardo D'Amico got the second half scoring started as touched a long pass from junior Alex Rechsteiner past an Owl's defender, which left him one-on-one with the goalkeeper and D'Amico didn't waste the opportunity as he gave Husson a 2-0 lead.
Just under a minute later D'Amico would add on to the lead as he blasted a left-footed shot just under the crossbar thanks to an assist from fellow freshman Miguel Duborjal. Sophomore Miguel Morales would tally the third goal of the five-minute stretch for the Eagles, as he made a brilliant run with the ball that ended with his second goal of the year being put on the board.
Two more Eagles would find the scoring column in the 64th and 74th minutes respectively, as senior Damian Sheffer and sophomore Arik Weinstein both recorded their first goals of the season, with Sheffer's tally being the first of his collegiate career. Morales tallied an assist on Weinstein's goal, while senior Kenny Penney assisted on Sheffer's scoring tally.
Rechsteiner played the 83 minutes in goal for Husson and was forced to make two saves on three shots. Freshman Garret Jordan cleaned up the remaining seven minutes and wasn't forced to make a save.
The Eagles finished their dominating performance with a 24-5 advantage in shots, including a 17-3 edge in shots on target.
"I am happy with the outcome of our match today," said head men's soccer coach Gavin Penny. "It is tough to play on their surface because the grass slowed us down in our movements. We had to adapt and fortunately we were able to do that successfully in the second half. I was happy to see all the players in the squad contributing. I wanted a complete team effort and I was happy to see it. It was a good challenge for us ahead of another grass surface on Saturday."
The men's soccer team will continue its five-game road trip on Saturday as it travels to Farmington to take on the University of Maine-Farmington in non-conference action. Kick-off for this contest is set for 2:30 p.m.
