Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zak Mills

Shumway’s sacrifice leads men’s soccer to last-second win over UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team captured a last-second victory on Saturday afternoon as graduate student Ben Shumway tallied the lone goal of the game with just four seconds left as the Eagles escaped with a 1-0 win over the University of Maine at Farmington at Leib Field in non-conference action.

The entirety of the game was a hard-fought contest in which scoring chances were hard to come by, as there were just nine combined shots between both teams for the game.

After a scoreless first half, Husson (4-2-3) found the winner in the 90th minute as a corner was played into the box by sophomore Miguel Morales. Morales' ball was touched slightly by senior Kenny Penney and found the mid-section of Shumway, who was standing next to the goal, before bouncing across the goal line to secure the win for the Eagles.

Husson outshot the opposition 7-2 for the game and held a 5-1 advantage over the Beavers (3-4-1) in shots on target. The Eagles took seven corner kicks during the game, including six in the second half, compared to just two for Farmington.

Junior Alex Rechsteiner manned the net for Husson and recorded his second shutout in his last three games played, in addition to tallying his 12th career shutout.

"Today was another tough afternoon for us," said head men's soccer coach Gavin Penny. "Farmington are much improved and made it really difficult for us. The surface made it difficult for us to play, but I am pleased that we kept plugging away. We kept trying to find a way through while dealing with their threat. It was a great way to end the game, but on the balance of the game, I think we were deserving. It gave us something to consider in the return match."

The men's soccer team will finally turn its attention to North Atlantic Conference play this coming week as it will play two conference affairs. The first game is a dual with Maine Maritime Academy in Castine on Tuesday evening. Kick-off for this conference opener is set for 7:30 p.m.
