BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team earned its second victory of the season on Monday evening as it defeated the Nor'easters of the University of New England 2-0 in non-conference action at the Blue Storm Stadium.
Husson (2-2-3) poured an onslaught of shots towards the UNE (1-4-2) goal, as it totaled nine first half shots, with five of those coming on target. The Eagle's relentless pursuit finally paid off in the 38th minute as junior Florian Gasser tallied his third goal of the season, as he placed a shot from the left corner of the six-yard box into the bottom right slot of the goal off of an assist from fellow junior Mario Alvarez, as Husson would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
The second half was a bit more evenly-matched, as the Nor'easters held a 4-3 advantage in shots, but the Eagles placed all of their shots on net, while UNE placed just one on target. Gasser would add an insurance goal for Husson in the 66th minute, as he would score from the other side of the six-yard box on an assist from sophomore Miguel Morales. The Eagle's defense would salt away the remaining 24 minutes and preserve the 2-0 victory.
Husson held a 12-7 edge in shots over the Nor'easters, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Junior Alex Rechsteiner was in net for the duration of the game for the Eagles, as he recorded his first clean sheet of the season and was forced to make two saves on two shots.
"I am very pleased with our performance tonight," said head men's soccer coach Gavin Penny. "I thought we really put in a top performance. We showed our dominance in possession and created some great opportunities to score. We worked hard defensively to prevent their threat in behind, and it was great to see the lads enjoying the game. We have had a tough week or so but tonight seemed to bring back the feel good factor. We needed it. We'll rest and recover tomorrow and get ourselves ready for Wednesday."
Husson will get a day off tomorrow before playing its third game in a four days when it travels to the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Wednesday. Kick-off for this non-conference contest is set for 3:30 p.m.
