Men’s soccer falls in non-conference action to Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Husson University men's soccer team fell 4-2 to Salve Regina University on Sunday morning in non-conference action at Toppa Field.

Husson (1-2-3) got the scoring started in the 25th minute when graduate student Ben Shumway scored his first goal of the season on a ball that squeaked through the goalkeepers hands to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks evened the score up just 12 minutes later, as Jordan Borges tallied his third goal of the season for Salve.

Husson took the lead back in the 56th minute as junior Mario Alvarez scored from the penalty spot for his third goal of the year, as the Eagles regained a 2-1 lead.

The Seahawks would score just 47 seconds after Alvarez's tally to knot the game back up, before scoring two goals in the final eight minutes to capture the 4-2 win.

Husson was outshot by Salve 13-12, including a 7-6 deficit in shots on goal.

Freshman Garret Jordan manned the net for the Eagles and made three saves on seven Seahawk shots.

"It was a super frustrating game for us today," said head men's soccer coach Gavin Penny. "We just didn't seem to be ready for the challenge. We played some good football in moments, but it's a two-way game, and games are determined just as much, maybe even more off the ball, than when you have possession. The lads knew that Salve would be a tough, physical team, but every time we gave ourselves the edge, we made bad mistakes and let them back in. We have to be better in those moments if we want to get back to our best. We are learning a lot about ourselves, about new players, what works and what doesn't. Tomorrow will afford us another opportunity. Hopefully, we will be better tomorrow."

The men's soccer team has a quick turnaround as they will compete in another non-conference matchup on Monday in Biddeford against the University of New England. Kick-off for this Monday evening contest is set for 6 p.m.
